Homework Tips

Try these following guidelines to make homework time easier for your child and less stressful for you. Please remember that homework is given nightly.

  • Give your scholar a break between school and homework. They should have a healthy snack, play with their sibling, tell you about their day, etc... They SHOULD NOT watch television. It is too easy to become engaged in the TV and then not want to do anything else. When homework is done, they can then watch television. A scheduled time should be set for your scholar to begin completing their homework each day.
  • They should have a consistent, quiet, uncluttered environment; such as a desk in their room, a chair at the kitchen table, etc... They should have a hard surface to write on and materials always ready to complete their assignments.
  • Try not to sit down with your scholar. The homework should be review or quick practice, henceforth, your scholar should be able to complete it independently. Homework time should only take about 30 or so miniutes, minus their 30 minute reading time.

Did you know?

  • Reading a single book at least three times through improves reading speed and accuracy. Research has shown that reading something three times before taking a quiz or changing books assist comprehension. When students read a passage or book multiple times, they are no longer using a lot of their mental energy focusing on word recognition or sounding out words, but now can use that energy to focus on understanding(comprehending) the story or passage.
  • Many students who have not mastered or memorized their multiplication facts struggle throughout school.
  • By the end of third grade at William Jefferson Clinton Elementary School, your child is expected to produce independently four or more organized paragraphs to every writing prompt.
